Yerba maté tea is a traditional South American tea that is both stimulating and delicious. It contains caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine and is said to offer the "strength of coffee, the health benefits of tea, and the euphoria of chocolate" all in one beverage!

The caffeine content of yerba maté varies between that of green tea and coffee.  It has a low tannin content, making it strong like coffee, without being bitter. Unlike coffee, however, yerba maté is unlikely to cause painful stomach acid or any jittery feelings.

Yerba maté was called “the drink of the gods” by many indigenous South Americans and later “the green gold of the Indios” by European settlers. It is made from the dried leaves of an evergreen holly, Ilex paraguariensis, a native plant of South America. The small shrub is wildcrafted or cultivated on plantations similar to those of tea.

Known as a drink of friendship, maté is traditionally steeped and sipped from a shared gourd. It is often served at social events and in countries where it is consumed, it exhibits the same cultural importance found in coffee cafés and Asian tea ceremonies.
